You must have received several emails by now, from private citizens who are outraged at the situation with three dogs in Stepney Meadows, Southern District. Animal Control has been to the property three times but have not collected the dogs. We, private citizens, have liaised with an animal sanctuary and have arranged for homes for all three dogs.

Two of the dogs are literally skin and bones. The third dog is left out tied in the sun, rain, lightning and thunder as videos which are circulating, have clearly shown. It has been 10 days since the video was published.

There is something fundamentally flawed with how this situation is being handled and Animal Control needs to do something about it. We, the public, will not accept this situation. Are you going to do something when one of the animals has died from heat, starvation and exhaustion?

This story has gone global and is being published internationally, and animal abuse and neglect will be highlighted and Barbados will soon be known for all the heinous treatment of animals which we, the private citizens are witnessing.

If Government is lacking in response, then, it will be too late to undo the damage, as hundreds of tourists are seeing what is happening right here in beautiful Barbados. We, the citizens, are fed up and frustrated that no one has acted swiftly. After three visits, and lots of excuses, these poor dogs, remain in a most unfortunate state.

I would highly suggest that you allow the Animal Sanctuary to function as the Animal Welfare entity, as they care more about the abused, neglected and stray animals on this island than other entities.

Dogs will continue to suffer daily without a department which is effective in its function. I don’t know what we would do without the RSPCA and private animal shelters on this island, who do so much to help these animals that are enduring hardships.

I urge that action be taken with these dogs in Southern District. Citizens are becoming more and more frustrated and angry at the lack of response on this matter. Why has nothing been done?

If you fail to turn things around in this country and address animal cruelty immediately, tourists are promising to boycott Barbados and publish these stories on an international level. Let’s sit back and watch how negatively this all impacts on Barbados. Tourism is our Business…Lets play our part…or not!!
