An accused facing two theft charges, who claims to have “issues” when housed at Dodds Prison on Thursday urged a magistrate to place him in “protective custody”.

Jennoah Sylvester Woodley, of Eastbourne, St Philip, made the plea before Magistrate Manila Renee after denying the charges leveled against him.

In fact, even before the charges were read the 46-year-old who reportedly has a hearing problem, stated: “I am not guilty. The matters are between me and two women . . . but I plead not guilty.”

He is accused of stealing $400 belonging to Natalie Shepherd on July 17 as well as $490 belonging to Tamira Gaskin  between August 25 and September 27.

Sergeant Kenmore Phillips objected to bail on the grounds that the accused had six prior convictions, is on bail with 11 other pending matters before the court.

“I can’t recall that I have any convictions. A man is innocent until proven guilty,” the accused stated.

When told that he would be remanded in order to also facilitate the services of an interpreter Woodley told the magistrate: “Ma’am I understand what you are saying, I am not arguing that. I going to remand. I understand that part.

“I am asking you what can you do for me on my remand? I want to be placed in protective custody. I have issues at prison so I want to know what can you do for me? Can you put me in a position where you can put me in protective custody away from the population, can you do that for me? I will live with the remand.”

Woodley was remanded into custody until November 7.
