Former Teen Champ Edwards wins Over-21 show

It was a case of did it once, so why not do it twice. That was the situation for winner of the 2018 Richard Stoute Teen Talent Competition Jalissa Edwards, who won the Over-21 Competition last Sunday night singing the same two songs she sung in 2018 to take the prize once again with “When We Were Young” and “Don’t You Remember” by Adele. 

Edwards tallied 845 points that earned her $3,000 and a trophy. She showcased outstanding voice control throughout. Chief judge Sheldon Hope said even though it was entertaining to see contestants opt to sing their better song in the second half, it was clear that the winner set the pace very high from her first choice and initial appearance. 

Fifth placed Shane Headley

Collecting 807 points for second place was no surprise as Kibibi Greenidge did a great job with Donna Summer’s “The Woman In Me” and “Piano In The Dark” by Brenda Russell. Her efforts garnered her $2,000 and a trophy. 

Just 13 points behind was the sweet-sounding Andreen McLean who won $1,500 and a trophy with her songs “Funny Valentine” made popular by Frank Sinatra and “Let’s Stay Together” originally done by Tina Turner

Taking fourth place was Zoe Armstrong with “Immortal” and “Poor Unfortunate Soul” and completing the top five was lone male Shane Headley doing “Disabled People are People Too” and “Look How Things Change”.

The other competitors in the final were Bentley Jones, Derrick Braithwaite, Natalie Hinkson, Kiara Hinkson, LaShawn Charles-Williams, Sardines Worrell and Benoni Blacket. 

The contestants were accompanied by a live band from the Barbados Community College. (CW)
