An early morning stabbing incident at a secondary school left a 16-year-old student nursing wounds and being treated at the Queen Elizabeth Hospital.

Police Communications and Public Affairs Officer Inspector (ag) Rodney Inniss confirmed the incident which occurred at Parkinson Secondary School in the Pine, St Michael and said it was reported around 8:10 in the morning on Friday.

Another 16-year-old male student from the same school was involved in the altercation.

Inspector Inniss said “The incident involved two 16-year-old male students of the said school. One of the students suffered injuries to his left arm, left side and back. He was transported to QEH for medical attention.”

The stabbing led to the premature closure of the school and to concern from the Barbados Union of Teachers (BUT) about violent acts among school children.

President of the Barbados Union of Teachers (BUT) Rudy Lovell, expressed his concern surrounding the incident. He said some behaviours by adults being seen in some homes around the island, are negatively impacting students.

“Any act of violence is a concern for the Barbados Union of Teachers, and even violence outside of schools because it negatively impacts the functioning of the school. Students are related to persons who are involved in violent acts, so to have students themselves perpetrating this form of violence is something that we don’t want.”

The BUT head added: “Both students and teachers are doing wonderful work within our schools [and] all stakeholders need to work together on this very vexing issue. Parents, schools, the church, sports clubs, students, and teachers all need to reinforce conflict resolution skills within schools and society. We need to highlight the positive achievements of our youth.”

Lovell suggested that a heightened level of security at the island’s schools may be needed.

Up until press time, the principal of the school could not be reached for comment.
