Following a three-year hiatus due to the COVID-19 pandemic the Barbados Community College’s (BCC) annual career showcase has returned to its face-to-face format.

On Wednesday and Thursday, students from secondary schools and members of the public, flocked to the ‘Eyrie’ Howell’s Cross Road, St Michael campus to get an insight into the programmes and services the institution offers.

Assistant Registrar at BCC and co-coordinator of the career showcase, Makeda Hart, said the college wanted to revive the career showcase to attract potential students.

Companies also grasped the opportunity to showcase their products and services and share samples with attendees.

“We want to promote the Barbados Community College once again to invite potential students in. One of the things that we recognise since COVID is that some students were opting to go back to sixth form for various reasons including that they want a structured environment or because of the costs.

“We want people to know that the Barbados Community College offers quality education at nominal cost, BDS$320 per year per course for associate degrees and bachelor degrees as well. We needed to push, we needed to promote the college and I believe that numbers will increase because once you promote and people know what you have to offer, the return will be positive,” Harte said, adding that there has been a slight reduction in the enrolment numbers for some programmes in recent years.

The career showcase which started at 9:30 a.m. and ended at 2:30 p.m. on both days gave students the opportunity to sit and chat with BCC representatives about the programmes offered. They were also able to interact with professionals from various fields who were on site.

Companies also grasped the opportunity to showcase their products and services and share samples with attendees.

Restaurant Trainer at the Jean and Norma Holder Hospitality Institute Cherise Osbourne who was co-coordinator of the showcase, said the response to the event was overwhelming. She said the students who visited the 19 stalls over the two days have been showing interest in the college’s divisions.

“We have corporate Barbados joining us today, so this showcase is a good opportunity for students to find out about careers they may be interested in pursuing. I am very pleased with the turnout in terms of the people coming to the showcase which has a lot to offer,” Osbourne said.
