Athletes from the Elite Distance Programme taking part in this weekend’s CARIFTA Games in the Bahamas were given a boost by Co-operators General Insurance.
During a presentation at its Collymore Rock, St Michael, headquarters on Saturday, they were presented with equipment ahead of the April 7 to 10 Games.
Human resources and marketing manager at Co-operators General Insurance, Cheryl Forde made the presentation.
The company has been providing support to the Elite Distance Programme for several years and careful consideration has always been given in consultation with their coaches about what they need.
“We wanted to applaud you the athletes that have made it to the CARIFTA team and with our association with the Elite Distance which is 10 years or so. We have decided that each year, you find a project that we can work with your club with. We also would have given through the years exercise equipment, you would have seen equipment in your gym that we would have sponsored so that each year we assist the athletes,” Forde said.
“We know it is costly for training and when we embarked on assisting Elite Distance our motive was not only to give financial support, we want to also give developmental support and we have done that…We delved into it and did our research and we decided to give a package which includes mats, towels, water bottles and also a massage gun to help in recovery.”
Present at the event were coaches of Elite Distance Programme Ramon Armstrong, Althea Belgrave and Greg Morris; athletes Chaneica Bryant, T’Shuan Sealy, Ashlyn Simmons, Fynn Armstrong and Luke McIntyre.
Missing were coaches Dwayne Bouncer, Joseph Parris, Christopher Taitt and athlete Layla Haynes.
