The Director of the Centre for Hybrid Studies and a lecturer in Science, History and Culture at the University of the West Indies, Dr Deryck Murray, believes a wider national conversation must be had on the implications of artificial intelligence (AI) on the Barbadian workforce.
His comments were made during Wednesday’s Sky AI seminar at Sky Mall, which saw experts from several fields connected to artificial intelligence speaking to students from the secondary and tertiary levels on the benefits and challenges of the rapidly growing technology.
Dr Murray told Barbados TODAY that given increased growth which has been seen in a number of AI projects globally, significant levels of layoffs within the workforce will be seen if the country does not prepare itself for the inevitability. (SB)
