Flash-flood watch remains in effect for Barbados

This alert message is valid from 12 noon and will be updated at 6 pm or sooner if conditions warrant.

A flash-flood watch remains in effect for Barbados.

A flash-flood watch is issued when heavy or excessive rainfall in a short period of time (generally less than six hours) could result in flash flooding within the watch area.

It does not mean that flooding will occur, but it is possible.

A tropical wave will continue affecting the island this afternoon and into tonight. Accumulations of up to one inch of rainfall have already occurred mainly across northern, western and some central sections of the island this morning.

Shower activity is expected to increase into tonight with a further one to three inches and possibly isolated higher amounts.

These wet conditions are forecast to persist throughout the weekend. This watch may be upgraded to a warning at short notice.

• Soil erosion on exposed or scarred land surfaces.
• Water settlements on roads and fields at the foot of hills and coastal roads.
• Adjustments to water levels of existing water bodies (ponds etc.).
• Objects or debris from higher elevations becoming embedded within fast-moving water flows.
• Delays on traffic routes with some roads becoming impassable in and out of minor towns.
• Residents and visitors should also be aware that this alert level could elevate to red.
