Moments before his rape and aggravated burglary trial was set to begin in Supreme Court No. 5 on Wednesday, Lawshawn Shaquon Hinds, of Lower Carlton, St James, confessed that on July 4, 2021, he had sexual intercourse with a woman without her consent, knowing she did not consent or was reckless as to whether she consented. Hinds, who was 17 at the time of the offence, also pleaded guilty to entering the complainant’s home as a trespasser and stealing two cell phones valued at $1 200, along with BDS$300, US$30 and £30, and at the time had a firearm. Referring to the complainant’s statement, Principal State Counsel Olivia Davis said that around 8 p.m. on the date in question, the husband and wife were drinking wine on the deck of their Airbnb in St James when a man with a white shirt tied around his face, Hinds, walked up the steps while pointing a small handgun at them. The husband told him he would give him all the money and cards in his wallet and got up to go into the house to get it when Hinds “erratically” directed the woman to go inside as well. The man rejected the credit cards, pointed to the towel the woman was wearing and told her to drop it, all the while keeping the gun pointed at the couple. Hinds then directed the husband to take off his clothes and have oral sex and intercourse with his wife while he watched. He asked the couple if they had condoms and pushed them into the back bedroom where he forced the wife to perform oral sex on him, before instructing her to brush her teeth and telling her to do the same to her husband. At that time, the house phone rang and Hinds became enraged, asking repeatedly, “Who is that?” The woman told him she did not know and Hinds ran into the other bedroom where the couple’s three-year-old son was sleeping, and she became scared he would hurt their child. Hinds returned, waving the gun saying, “What do you say? Don’t stop, don’t talk, you know what this is, right?” He then made several attempts to have sex with the woman and she told him, “Look, this is not working. Could we not transfer you all our money instead?” You Might Be Interested In Crystal Beckles-Holder, 2nd runner up in regional competition GUYANA: Body of child found after gold mine collapses Barbadians asked to help with return tickets for Haitians Hinds told the couple he was going to go and instructed them to lie underneath the bed. The complainant said the incident lasted around 30 minutes. Hinds’ attorney, Sian Lange, requested a pre-sentence report and a psychological and psychiatric report for her client. These were ordered by Madam Justice Pamela Beckles who adjourned the matter until April 25. Barbados Today Stay informed and engaged with our digital news platform.
