The Barbados Defence Force, in partnership with the Barbados Museum and Historical Society, has unveiled an exhibition chronicling the island’s military legacy from the mid-1600s to the present day. The event marks the 45th anniversary of the force’s establishment.

At Thursday’s opening ceremony on the museum grounds, military advisor to the Chief of Staff Lt Colonel Carlos Lovell highlighted the exhibition’s timeliness and its multiple objectives.

“The military historical exhibition which you will have the pleasure of witnessing has many goals: enhancing the heritage tourism products of Barbados, and educating locals and visitors alike about our rich military history,” he remarked.

“The exhibit features a detailed timeline that guides viewers through the role and development of our country’s military.”
Lt Col Lovell emphasised the unique stories behind each exhibit, noting their contribution to Barbados’ military heritage.

Among the prized artefacts are the original Barbados National Flag, first raised at the Garrison Savannah on November 30, 1966; the Ship of State, a gift from the British Government upon Barbados’ Independence; and a ceremonial katana from those surrendered by Japan at the end of World War II.

The force’s commitment to preserving historical objects was underscored, with Lt Col Lovell stating, “The Barbados Defence Force recognises our responsibility to work collaboratively with our partners, to help preserve objects and sites of historical significance. We have found a worthy ally in the Historical Society, and welcome other participants across government and wider Barbados.”

Maureen Davis, senior vice president of the Barbados Museum and Historical Society, lauded the exhibition. Titled Reflecting on the Past and Recommitting to the Future: The 45th Anniversary of the Barbados Defence Force, Davis noted that it serves as a powerful testament to the sacrifices and achievements that have shaped the national identity.

She highlighted the force’s crucial role in partnering with the museum to safeguard not only national security but also cultural heritage.

“It is this shared history and commitment to the preservation of our heritage that underscores the vital partnership between the Barbados Museum and Historical Society and the Barbados Defence Force,” Davis said.

“Together, we’ve worked tirelessly to protect and celebrate Barbados’ rich history, ensuring future generations can learn from and be inspired by our shared past.”
