Hospital guard, visitor altercation prompts probe

An altercation between a security officer and a visitor at the Queen Elizabeth Hospital (QEH) on Wednesday evening has prompted an investigation by both hospital management and police.

The incident occurred around 7:45 p.m. at the hospital’s main entrance.

“The matter is currently under investigation by both the hospital’s internal team and members of The Barbados Police Service, who responded to the scene,” the hospital confirmed in a statement.

While details of the altercation remain unclear, the QEH emphasised its commitment to maintaining a safe environment for all.

“Ensuring the safety and well-being of our patients, visitors, and staff is our top priority,” the statement read, highlighting the crucial role of security personnel in this effort.

The hospital management pledged to review and enhance their procedures based on the investigation’s findings.

“As part of our standard process, we will carefully assess the findings of the internal investigation and take any necessary actions to enhance our protocols and training to ensure the highest standard of service and safety,” the QEH stated.

The hospital gave an assurance that it was dedicated to providing a “safe and welcoming environment for all those seeking medical care, visiting loved ones, or conducting business”. The statement also emphasised the QEH’s ongoing commitment to “excellence in healthcare delivery and security”.

The QEH has promised full cooperation with “law enforcement and relevant stakeholders” throughout the investigation process. As the situation develops, it said it will provide further updates to the public “as appropriate”.
