Caddle: Effective policy implementation key, not just new measures

St Michael South Member of Parliament Marsha Caddle has urged government to prioritise the successful application of current policies over the creation of new ones.

In her reply  to the recent Budgetary Proposals, Caddle acknowledged the Budget’s potential for significant change, labeling it “transformational,” however, she emphasised that achieving such transformation requires diligent and effective execution.

“Just as we have to stick the Ministry of Innovation, Science, and Technology, get the basics right [and] deliver on the things that are meaningful, remove the nuisances in people’s lives, do that before we head for the lofty things which we are perfectly capable of doing, just as we have to do that we have to make sure we have the wherewithal for implementation of these measures,” Caddle asserted.

She further argued that effective governance extends beyond simply introducing new policies, and that it is equally vital to establish a more robust and efficient administrative framework for the future.

Caddle added, “We have to make sure that when we look behind us, we have not just introduced suites of measures, but we have left the landscape of governance stronger for having been here. That we don’t keep saying, ‘oh dear well we tried to do this’.”

Furthermore, dismissing the notion of adding more high-ranking officials, Caddle contended that the real need lies in bolstering operational capacity at the ground level.

“We don’t need any more top anybody… in the middle, in the trenches, that is where we need to be for execution capacity. To make sure that these measures become real in people’s lives,” Caddle concluded. (SB)
