BMS issues warning amid strong winds, choppy seas

Strong winds sweeping across Barbados’ marine space are generating rough seas and posing challenges for small craft operators and beachgoers.
According to the Barbados Meteorological Services (BMS), the Atlantic high-pressure system is currently generating wind speeds ranging from 25 to 33 knots across the waters surrounding the island and the eastern Caribbean. “These wind speeds are generating a deterioration in sea conditions, with swells of 2.0m to 3.0m in open water. Winds are expected to remain in this range today and may persist into tonight. Swell heights are expected to decrease towards the end of the week with swells of up to 2.5m.”
As such, the BMS has upgraded the existing Small Craft Advisory to a Small Craft Warning, cautioning mariners and sea users of the increased hazards.
“Small craft operators and beachgoers should be prepared for the possibility of large open water swells, which can be hazardous to some vessels. Operation of smaller vessels can be difficult at times. Possible loss of life or injury,” the BMS said.
“If you intend to go into the water, it is recommended that you use beaches with on-duty lifeguards,” the BMS further advised. “Small craft operators should follow the advice of relevant agencies.”
The small craft warning will be updated at 6 p.m. today or sooner if conditions warrant. (BMS/BT)
