The St Nicholas Abbey Heritage Railway tours got off to a spectacular start this morning, when the fully booked three-carriage train, Badger, took to the track for the first time in Barbados.
With close to 100 people aboard, the first train ride left the starting point at St Nicholas Abbey and went on a journey of almost two miles, passing through a limestone path down the scenic Cherry Tree Hill and back.
During the approximately 45 minutes journey, tourists and locals had the opportunity to learn more about the rich history of the area.
Officials are pleased that tourists and locals are enthusiastic about the train ride.
Co-owner of St Nicholas Abbey Simon Warren told Barbados TODAY he was pleased with the response.
“It went very well. We were fully booked, it went very well,” he said.
“People were enjoying it. They said that they were glad we now have a train in Barbados again. The people were very, very happy,” said Warren.
Officials are hoping the new attraction will provide a major boost to the island’s heritage tourism product.
Currently, the locomotive train, which will operate six days a week, from Sunday to Friday, consists of three carriages, holding up to 32 passengers each. (MM)
