Thief for June sentencing

A young man convicted on several burglary charges will reappear in the District ‘A’ Magistrates’ Court on June 19.

That was the date given to 21-year-old Teriq Kaareem Linton, of Suttle Street, the City on his recent appearance before Magistrate Kristie Cuffy-Sargeant.

The long adjournment to which Linton agreed was granted in order to give probation officers time to prepare a report on him in preparation for sentencing.

Linton previously pleaded guilty to breaking and entering Subway and stealing a scale worth $472 belonging to Christopher Hoad between February 29 and March 1. He also admitted breaking into Caesar’s Deli between March 4 and 5 and stealing a $400 cash register belonging to Carol Caesar.

He pleaded guilty to loitering along Victoria Street, St Michael on March 22 with cause to suspect that he was about to commit theft. He also took responsibility for having a 12-inch heavy-duty screwdriver, a pair of gloves and a ski mask, articles which could be used in the course or in connection with burglary, in his possession on March 22 when he was not at his place of abode.

After the prosecutor detailed the facts of the cases Linton told Magistrate Cuffy-Sargeant he took  “full responsibility” for his actions. “I made a mistake.”

He claimed that the last year had been challenging.

“My life has changed drastically, low mental state, going through a lot with my mother. She was emotional and I responded emotionally as well. Being stubborn I wanted my own way so I left. I am renting a room and my current girlfriend is eight months pregnant.

“I ask for mercy and leniency. I need help, counseling for stress, depression and making bad decisions, anything you all can do. This is not the life I want for myself.”

He is now on remand at Her Majesty’s Dodds Prison awaiting his fate.
