The BMS closely monitors two tropical waves

The Barbados Meteorological Services (BMS) is closely monitoring the progress of two tropical waves in the central Atlantic.

It however said there are no watches or warnings currently in effect for the island in its weather information statement#2 issued at 11 a.m.

The BMS said the first system, Tropical Wave #16 is located near 50 degrees west at 8 a.m. today which is approximately 650 miles, (1050 kilometres) to the east of Barbados.

“The system remains disorganized due to unsupportive surrounding environmental conditions. Further development of the system is likely to be slow as it tracks westward to west-northwestward at 40km per hour or 25 miles per hour. On its current track, the relatively strong winds field is expected to pass north of Barbados on Wednesday afternoon.”

The second wave, Tropical Wave #17 is located near 34 degrees west with an associated area of low pressure centred near 6.8 degrees north, 34.5 degrees west or about 1760 miles (2835 kilometres) to the east of Barbados.

The BMS said: “Showers and thunderstorms associated with this feature have become better organized over the last 12 hours and slow development of this system is possible as it tracks westward at 35km/per hour (or 22 mph.)”

The forecasters have urged the public to closely monitor the progress of these two systems over the next few days and stay alert for updates.

The BMS will issue its next update at 5 p.m.today.
