Regatta gets sailing next week

Organisers have put all systems in place for the 2022 staging of the annual Barbados Sailing Week better known as the regatta and head of the Barbados Cruising Club, Commodore Peter Griffith, said they are looking forward to hosting a great event.

During his virtual address this afternoon, Griffith outlined the schedule and said registration for the sailing week will commence next Tuesday, January 18th from 6 a.m. to 10 p.m. Registration will also take place on Wednesday, January 19 from 6 a.m. to 7 p.m.

A total of 21 local vessels are expected to participate along with seven from overseas. The event has managed to attract major sponsors such as the Barbados Tourism Marketing Inc, Mount Gay and Digicel. While the Barbados Yacht Club and Barbados Cruising Club are back as partners.

In outlining the event, Griffith explained that the official opening of the regatta and lime will be held next Wednesday at the Barbados Cruising Club. The following day at 6 p.m. it is expected that the skippers’ briefing will take place at the Barbados Yacht Club and then the after lime which should conclude at 10 p.m.

The first race called Round the Island is expected to sail off on Friday, January 21, and is traditionally held on the birthday of Errol Barrow in his honour as one of the co-founders. It will begin from the Cruise Club at 8 a.m. with the race watch taking place between the Barbados Cruising Club and the Barbados Yacht Club and at various points around the island.

Other watchpoints include Tapas restaurant, Animal Flower Cave and also areas in St. Phillip.

The coastal races will take place on Saturday, January 22, in Carlisle Bay from 11 a.m. to 6 p.m.

There will be a lime on Saturday and the coastal races will resume on Sunday, January 23 at 11 a.m. while around 6 p.m. on that same day the prize-giving and dinner will take place.

Griffith also announced that in addition to the races of the big boats they are going to have dinghy racing, kite sailing and competition for the children which will be arranged by the Barbados Sailing Association.
