Nakhuda wants East Indian history in school curriculum

The East Indian community in Barbados has called on the Ministry of Education to include their history in the curriculum of a future educational transformation system.

The appeal was made by Sabir Nakhuda, a Muslim author, researcher and historian who presented a copy of a book he wrote on the history of the East Indian population here as part of his submission to the public consultation on proposals for educational transformation at Queen’s College on Thursday night.

Nakhuda, who said it took him 15 years to write the book, sought to anchor his case for curriculum inclusion by highlighting East Indian folklore and its contribution to nation-building here over the past 110 years.

“What I would suggest now that we are at a stage where we are faced with a bright future and we are working towards a bright future, I believe that the history of the East Indians in Barbados should also be included within the curriculum of the future plan that we are going to have for the educational system, that we are going to have for Barbados,” Nakhuda suggested.

He assured the authorities they did not have to go far for the resource material because he had it in his book.

The author was advised to pass it on to the ministry officials, which he did on completion of his presentation. (EJ)
