BCC student wins Lion’s Club of Barbados South Glyne Barker Memorial Scholarship

On the day of love, Valentine’s Day and Ash Wednesday, the Lions Club of Barbados South presented love in an envelope in the form of its annual Glyne Barker Memorial Scholarship, to an outstanding student of the Barbados Community College.

Since 2010, the club has been presenting the $1,000 scholarship to students in the Division of Technology’s Building and Civil Engineer Programme, who not only meet a minimum Grade Point Average (GPA) requirement but also impress the interviewing panel with their passion, commitment, and drive.

It is given in honour of the late Lion Glyne Barker MJF, a former President- who was an Engineer.

This year’s recipient Alanna Johnson, is a former student of The St Michael School and is in the final semester of her two-year Associate Degree programme at the College. She was unanimously selected by this year’s panel, having qualified for consideration with an outstanding GPA of 3.476.

Johnson, who is only one of three female students in her programme, was very appreciative of being selected and said the money would go towards her continuing studies in the discipline. She also dedicated her successes to her mother.

The principal of the College, Annette Alleyne was pleased to partner with the Lions Club South and said she is looking forward to discussing other ways that this partnership could be improved upon.

President of the club, Lion Dwane Goddard encouraged Johnson to continue with her attitude towards her studies and wished her well. He too looks forward to greater collaboration between the Club and the BCC.
