(RR) The Bajan Firefighters Network turned up the heat and turned on the hoses Saturday for a ‘sexy car wash’ charity fundraiser aimed at fuelling their ongoing community safety initiatives. Volunteers and local firefighters gathered in Worthing, adjacent to the post office, offering a practical service to drivers while raising much-needed funds for the organisation. The volunteers also sought new registrations for their Barbados Builder Identifier, a digital ID that helps emergency responders locate homes seeking assistance. Public relations officer and volunteer for the Bajan Firefighters Network, Krystal Penny Bowen, explained that the event was born out of a desire to reconnect with the community after a brief hiatus from fundraising. “The charity has been around for a couple of years, and we haven’t done a fundraising event in a while, so we just thought about this idea, and it’s something that is practical,” Bowen said. “Persons need to get their car washed… and we [had] some of the firefighters and some of the volunteers help assist with this activity.” While the event brought a fun, high-energy atmosphere to Worthing, the ultimate goal of the fundraiser is deeply rooted in public safety. The Bajan Firefighters Network relies heavily on donations to fund its grassroots outreach programmes, particularly its smoke alarm installation drive. “The charity is always doing a lot of community work,” Bowen noted. “One of the key things that we focus on is helping persons with their smoke alarms and installations, especially for those who are disabled and also for those who are elderly, who might not be able to have someone to do something like that.” In addition to installing life-saving equipment, the network frequently delivers educational presentations on fire safety. According to Bowen, the proceeds from the car wash will go directly toward purchasing smoke alarms, financing community activities, and showing appreciation for the organisation’s dedicated members and volunteers.
