Entertainment More than just academics Barbados Today21/02/20190262 views BCC’s Got Talent was a movie. Last Saturday, this talent show fulfilled its aim of showcasing some of the creative abilities that Barbados Community College students have to offer. It all started last November when students from all divisions were invited to a series of auditions to perform what they believed was their best talents. Twenty contestants went to the semi-finals last November, with only ten making it to the finals stage this weekend. Joshua Archer, Jessica Cyrilien, Tinesha Drayton, Theo Greenidge, Kayla Lambert, Luanne Philémon, Trinity Thompson, Stephan Ward and Khai Williams all performed in front of a full house in the Liberal Arts Auditorium. Theo Greenidge took first place with a powerful spoken word piece. Greenidge who was the only spoken word performer for the night delivered a piece that was centred on Black History Month. He shared the times when he believed that a black man only mattered to the world. Greenidge said he enjoyed every minute of his performance and was glad he caught the attention of everyone in the crowd. He was especially grateful to his fellow contestants, who became like brothers and sisters to him. Moving forward, he hopes that the Guild could hold more events like the talent show to allow persons like himself to be heard. First runner-up, Jessica Cyrilien, sang Vice Versa Love by Barrington Levy and second runner-up, Kayla Lambert sang You Don’t Own Me by Grace and G-Easy. President of the Students’ Guild Kobie Broomes expressed his satisfaction with the event and his team for pulling it off. He said BCC’s Got Talent was one of the events along with various fetes and sessions hosted by the Students’ Guild as a way to revive some of the activities the school had before the Guild’s hiatus in 2013. To him, the event was well supported and only showcased a fraction of all the talent that BCC has to offer. Director of Social Activities and Producer of the BCC’s Got Talent show Rachael Lewis concurred with the president saying the show was indeed a success. She was grateful to the Guild Council and the sponsors. “I took the initiative not only to showcase the talent that the students have but to also to bring some life into BCC. It is important to me that schools ensure that students not only learn at school but have the opportunity to create new memories.”
