‘Complex’ matter adjourned

Bridgetown Magistrate Douglas Frederick has made it clear to six accused who are currently on remand on a series of “complex” matters that the cases against them will not be dismissed anytime soon.

The District ‘A’ Magistrate made his position known after one of the men asked for a final adjournment in the case after the prosecutor informed the court that there was a file in the matter that was not yet completed.

Station Sergeant Carrison Henry was referring to several matters involving 27-year-old Richard Shamario Worrell, of Derriston Road, Grazettes, St Michael; 21-year-old Rachad Justin Bowen and 21-year-old Ranako Kadeaine Brathwaite, both of Fairfield Cross Road, Tudor Bridge, St Michael; 28-year-old Adigun Rabbi Hinds, of 5A, Maddison Terrace, Deacons, St Michael; 17-year-old Malik Derick Fenty, of 2nd Avenue, Redman Road, Deacons, St Michael and 28-year-old Richad Barry Boyce, of 2nd Avenue, Kellman Road, Black Rock, St Michael.

“Sir I would like a final adjournment,” Worrell told Frederick this afternoon after the prosecutor requested an adjournment in the cases. The men have been on remand at HMP Dodds since May 2018.

Among the charges, the six men are jointly accused of discharging a firearm along Fairfield Road in a manner that placed a man in danger of death or serious bodily harm. It is further alleged that they had possession of two 9 mm caliber pistols, two 40 caliber pistols, 17 rounds of 40mm caliber ammunition and 29 rounds of 9 mm caliber ammunition on May 20, 2018, while Hinds, Fenty, Bowen, Boyce and Worrell are alleged to have discharged a firearm along Kew Road on the same date which placed four people in danger of death or serious bodily harm.

“There had to be a reason for the police to charge we . . . so [the file being incomplete] means they do not have enough evidence in the matter,” Worrell stated.

That argument did not move Frederick who responded: “This is a complicated matter. This is not an old matter . . . it involves not one accused but several . . . all these things are alleged to
have happened at the same time, so it is a complex.

 “Right now society is crying out about firearms in these types of occurrences . . . . I am not going to dismissed this matter in any hurry,” Frederick said.

However, Hinds and Worrell stated that they were currently in prison and the current situation has “nothing to do with we”.

The six have been remanded to Dodds for a further 28 days.
