Jazz, art, fashion and food . . . A delightful night of fundraising for Rhapsody patrons

It was for a worthy cause. It was billed as an evening of Jazz, Art and Fashion — Rhapsody in Blue 2020 and held under the patronage of Professor the Most Honourable V. Eudine Barriteau, Pro Vice-Chancellor and Principal of UWI Cave Hill Campus and Managing Director of RBC Royal Bank Robert de Silva.

The proceeds from the event are in aid of the UWI-RBC Race for the Kids initiative. The funds will benefit the UWI Student Hardship Fund, scholarships and the First Year Experience Mental Health Programme.

On show was the artwork of 16 exhibitors, the work of eight designers and clothing outlets while the jazz and entertainment came from the Barbados Community College’s Jazz Ensemble.

The BCC Jazz Ensemble did a good job in providing quality entertainment and setting the mood. Among the songs performed were Adele’s Hello, Alicia Keys’ If I Ain’t Got You, Rihanna’s We Found Love and Gabby’s Emmerton.

Under the tutelage of Kirk Layne, the BCC Jazz Ensemble is made up of eight members. They are: Dishon Alleyne, Kemal Braithewaite, Mackele Dottin, Kofi Greaves, Kofi Gilkes, Kiros Graham, Tyreed Greenidge, David Scott and Shekara Straker.

The fashion was creative, refreshing and well-received. The fashion designers and boutiques on show were: Arielle Rock, Avark Inc (Mark and Ava Daniel), Fifth Element Designs Inc (Andrea King), Arjana (Annstein Clark), Opastijar Nobi Inc (Samuel Gittens), Welchwear Fashions (Lester Welch), Martindale’s and The Hub, Fashion by the Bay.

The art was picturesque, interesting, and caught the attention of viewers. Those on display were: Feilding Babb, Cequoia Holligan, Everick Lynton, Cher-Antoinette, Che-Amor Cummins-Greaves, Glenroy Jordan, Jill McIntyre, Markley Clarke, Neil Paul, Neville “Oluyemi” Legall, Omowale Stewart, Susan Alleyne Forde, Vanita Gopwani Comissiong, C-Toi Wearable Art, Secrexx Head to Toe and Crystal Forms Barbados.

Delectable hors d’oeuvres were served throughout the night along with samples of finger food. A number of signature cocktails were also on sale. A suckling pig was carved in the foyer and patrons invited to enjoy as they viewed and purchased the art work.

At a cost of $20, patrons also got the chance to “Spin the Wheel” and win prizes. A lucky patron also won a door prize of a ceramic vase valued at $400 compliments Earthworks Pottery.
