Some SSA services impacted as a result of heavy rain

Public Relations Officer, of the Sanitation Service Authority (SSA), Carl ‘Alf’ Padmore says the weather conditions currently being experienced across the country have resulted in some disruptions of the Authority’s services.

“Due to the heavy rainfall we had to discontinue most of our services especially those in the north of the island, and then as we come central and even the southern parts there will be lots of disruptions because at the end of the day we have to make sure that man and then equipment, that they are safe,” Padmore explained.

He had this advice for residents.

“What we are realising though and this is something we want to urge Barbadians not only for today but [for] the future – once there is heavy rainfall we prefer that you keep your garbage on the inside of your property. Once the garbage is on the outside especially if you don’t have it in a can it will make its way into the drains and that will lead to flooding,” the SSA spokesman said.

The country is currently under a flash-flood warning which is in effect until 6 p.m. today or sooner if conditions warrant.

The Barbados Meteorological Services said such a warning is issued when rapid flooding due to heavy or excessive rainfall in a short period of time (generally less than six hours) is occurring or is imminent in the warning area.

Maximum rainfall accumulations of 40.0 to 100.0 mm in heavy showers are expected across the island throughout the day.

Residents and visitors should note that the following impacts are imminent during this forecast period – Strong runoff from higher elevations. Soil erosion likely on bared or scarred land surfaces. Debris such as small rocks, mud, and tree foliage could end up on roads and property. Traffic delays are likely. Flooding at the foot of hillsides and coastal roads is possible.
