Stop with the insults, CTUSAB tells campaigning politicians

Dennis de Peiza

The Congress of Trade Unions and Staff Associations of Barbados (CTUSAB) is calling on politicians to stop “insulting, ridiculing and humiliating” individuals.

General Secretary Dennis De Peiza said in a statement that while there is a time and place for political banter, it must not be exercised without showing regard for the dignity and the human rights of others.

Making specific reference to the campaign for the upcoming St George North by-election, De Peiza called for an immediate stop to the hurling of personal insults, especially on the political platform.

“The unethical behaviour which is being displayed by some politicians and speakers on political platforms during the course of the ongoing campaign in the by-election of the constituency of St George North, is disturbing and unacceptable,” the statement read.

CTUSAB was adamantthat politicians should not use the political platform to chastise or humiliate public officers and members of civil society, and neither should parliamentarians use the immunity of Parliament for this purpose.

“It is important that our politicians and political platform speakers behave in a dignified manner, and to do so with due regard for the principles of respect and decency,” the trade unionist said.

De Peiza urged members of the public to demand high standards of ethical behaviour from leaders in politics and society.

“In calling on political leaders and leaders in the society to demonstrate a high sense of ethical behaviour in public life, CTUSAB strongly urges all national organisations to establish a Code of Conduct, to which they hold the leadership and members accountable,” the press release said.
