Young mother remains on remand, unable to post bail

A young mother who admitted last month to mistreating her one-year-old daughter in a case captured on video remains on remand at Her Majesty’s Prison Dodds.

Shanice Nikita Alicia Reece, 27, Sargeant’s Village Main Road, Christ Church, was unable to find someone to sign bail on her behalf when she appeared before the District ‘A’ Magistrates’ Court on Monday.

Reece has been on remand pending sentencing after she pleaded guilty to the October 15 offence of willfully ill-treating her child in a manner likely to cause unnecessary suffering or injury.

A video of the woman and child was circulated on social media showing her choking the child.

But Reece, who admitted her actions were “wrong”, said: “The video was not supposed to go viral. I just send it to the father to get [his] attention. I wasn’t trying to hurt my child.”

Chief Magistrate Ian Weekes gave an assurance that Reece would get the necessary help she needed including counselling.

Reece will reappear before the court on November 15 for another chance at bail.
