Dr Denis Lowe remembered as a man of faith and purpose

A man of faith and purpose who was dedicated to uplifting the lives of working class Barbadians. These were the words shared during Saturday’s thanksgiving service, as former parliamentary representative for Christ Church East, Dr Denis Lowe, was laid to rest at Coral Ridge Memorial Gardens, where friends, family, and supporters came out in their numbers to pay their final respects.

Reverend Dr McAthin Hinds, who knew Lowe from his days of studying to be a licensed minister from the Caribbean Wesleyan College, said the late parliamentary representative was a prime example of how hard work and dedication to a belief of surviving others can propel one into greatness within any field.

“Denis represents many youths today who are wired for greatness but programmed for early failure. That programme has been etched in their psyche by such phenomenon as early childhood trauma, generations of poverty in their family of origins, and to a large extent a society that has relegated persons who fail the Common Entrance Exam, especially at the time when he would have done it, as not being academic, but simply being fit for a trade.

“Thankfully, Dr Lowe got his programme for failure rewritten…”

Former Deputy General Secretary of the Barbados Workers Union and friend of Lowe, Robert Morris, said Lowe was a man dedicated to national issues, from the environment right down to the lives of his constituents.

“Dr Denis Lowe’s main objective was to improve the [lives] of working people and he succeeded to some extent. The drainage unit was one of his projects, he was a dedicated environmentalist and conservationist … after the horror of Mount ‘Stinkeroo’ [Mangrove Pond Landfill], he tried to support the waste to energy strategy but met with strong opposition for reasons which some of us understand.

“He was a Christian person, and visited every church in his constituency for group worship, for special occasions and he was there for funerals on his own volition. He never understood the concept of giving up on his ideals and so to the last, he was contesting positions in his great party.”

Lowe’s brother, Tyrone, thanked friends and supporters for their continued prayers, and stated he will not soon be forgetting by his family and constituency, because of the clear impact had on their lives, stating: “You are gone, but will never be forgotten by family, friends, colleagues, and constituents of Christ Church East. Well done good and faithful servant, may you rest in peace and rise in glory.” (SB)
