Fruit and vegetable vendors to get new stalls soon

After some delays in late 2022, fruit and vegetable vendors are expected to receive keys soon to their new stalls in Phase 2 of the Fairchild Street Market Village.

Communications consultant with the Barbados Tourism Investment Inc. (BTII) JoyAnn Haigh told Barbados TODAY that the initial plan was to hand over the new set of stalls to vendors in December, but some additional inspections had to be undertaken.

“The reason why we did not hand over the keys at that time is that we needed some time to correct some of the small issues. We also felt that because the inspection took a little longer than anticipated, it would have run us into the actual week leading up to Christmas, and we did not want to disrupt the vendors [by] having to move them from where they are, [causing] them to lose out on sales.”

“In January we are looking to start the process of the handover,” she added.

Phase 3 of the project, which will see the installation of a new butcher’s block for the area, is also expected to begin early in the year.

Haigh said there’s no official start date, but work on the block is scheduled to start soon after all the keys for the fruit and vegetable vendors have been handed off. (SB)
