Low-keyed NUPW elections expected next week

Incumbent president Kimberley Agard

Public workers in Barbados will go to the polls next Tuesday to elect new leadership.

However, the run-up to the April 5 elections for a fresh executive of the 10 000-strong National Union of Public Workers (NUPW) will be without the usual intense campaigning to fill vacant positions.

Incumbent president Kimberley Agard said that’s because most of the officers on her current executive have been nominated unopposed.

“The election this time is expected to be quite low-keyed because four out of the six executive positions are unopposed, and therefore the campaign wouldn’t be at the level it has been over the last couple of years. However, support will be given to the persons seeking election in the two available spots,” Agard told Barbados TODAY on Wednesday.

“Up for election would be first vice president which is currently held by Brother John Bostic and his opponent is Fabian Jones. Then we have the post of secretary/treasurer which is now being held by Brother Roy Greenidge. After 30 plus years of service to the organisation, he is on pre-retirement leave. Therefore he wouldn’t be returning,” she disclosed.

The NUPW leader said that post has three contenders, who are Denise Straker, McLita King and Tamesha Lowe. (EJ)
