Barbados’ top-ranked female surfer Chelsea Tuach was eliminated in the round of 16 when the World Surf League Barbados Surf Pro continued at the Soup Bowl, Bathsheba today.
However, the island’s hopes of a podium finish were not all lost as Jacob Burke advanced to the quarterfinals of the men’s division.
Competing in Heat 4, Tuach, the winner of last year’s QS3000 event, could only muster a total score of 8.93 to finish third.
That heat was won by America’s Talia Swindal with a score of 11.34, while Havanna Cabrero of Puerto Rico was second having scored 11.04.
Chelsea Roett was also eliminated in the round of 16 after she finished fourth in Heat 3 with a score of 7.57.
Zoe Benedetto of the USA (11.57) was the winner of that heat while her compatriot Bella Kenworthy also advanced after posting a score of 10.63.
Meanwhile, Josh Burke continued his stellar run in the competition by easily winning Heat 2 to advance to the quarterfinals.
Burke had scores of 7.17 and 6.73 to total 13.90. Also advancing from the heat was the USA’s Jabe Swierkocki, who finished second with a total score of 11.83.
Burke will now face USA’s Evan Geiselman in the final eight.
Earlier, Burke had finished second in Heat 2 behind American John Mel to advance to the round of 16.
However, his brother Jacob wasn’t as fortunate, as he was eliminated at that stage after placing third in Heat 4.
Jacob ended with a score of 9.47, well behind eventual heat winner Anthony Fillingim of Costa Rica (12.50) and second-placed Nolan Rapoza (12.43).
