Airport workers get pay increase

Some 500 workers at the Grantley Adams International Airport (GAIA) have been given a pay increase.
The deal, which was brokered by their bargaining agent, the National Union of Public Workers (NUPW), is similar to what the Government granted public officers earlier this year – a three per cent increase for 2023 and 2024 and a one-off lump sum of $1 500.
The announcement was made on Friday by NUPW president Kimberley Agard who disclosed that the workers who will benefit from the pay hike include custodians, security personnel, customer service representatives, and engineering, maintenance and administrative staff.
“We are pleased to make this announcement ahead of discussions about the private-public partnership lease arrangement and the amendments to the Pensions Act. Obviously, the National Union of Public Workers is optimistic about the future of employment at the airport,” Agard told Barbados TODAY, adding that the NUPW was the only union tabling a proposal.
“This increase in wages and lump sum payment will benefit the hard-working men and women who ensure the smooth operation of the airport. We are committed to working with the airport management to ensure that employment remains secure and fair for all of our workers.”
Agard added that the NUPW looked forward to continuing discussions with the airport management and other stakeholders to ensure the interest of workers is represented in any future arrangements.
Meanwhile, the union president disclosed that discussions will begin shortly on the planned lease arrangement for the management of the GAIA.
“Our members will be involved in those discussions as well. Our shop stewards will be part of those discussions,” Agard said.
Grantley Adams International Airport is to be leased to an entity which will manage, operate and develop the facility under a 25 to 30-year concession. The agreement will include expansion and upgrades to the airport.
