March planned to protest proposed NIS changes

A group of citizens concerned about proposed changes to the National Insurance Scheme (NIS) is urging Barbadians to join a march on Saturday to demonstrate their objections.

The march, titled Leave We Lifeline Alone, has been organised by the Unity Workers’ Union (UWU), The Steering Committee, and the Marcia Weekes Show.

It will begin at 10 a.m. at Kensington Oval and is scheduled to end at Independence Square at 1.p.m., where no gathering will be encouraged.

During a press conference held at the UWU’s Belleville, St Michael headquarters this morning, General Secretary Caswell Franklyn said the march will allow Barbadians to show their objection to the unfair changes to NIS legislation.

He said Government’s proposal to increase the pensionable age to 68 in 2034 is unfair and will have a significant negative impact on citizens, particularly the younger generation.
Franklyn said while he was not encouraging Barbadians to riot, they needed to stand up for what is right. (AH)
