Walters pledges continued support for DLP

One of the losing Democratic Labour Party (DLP) presidential candidates Ryan Walters has come out of the elections with “invaluable knowledge and enlightening experiences”, and pledging continued support for the political party.

The businessman thanked those who supported and voted for him in the election, as he maintained that his vision for the party, which was presented during his campaign, remained relevant.

“Apart from speaking to and interacting with many of you, the concept of the six pillars which I carved out is, to date, the best accomplishment of this journey. In it, you will find information that can easily help to provide a blueprint as to how we go about treating to our membership, our organs and the people of Barbados. The document is in the hands of many of you and it is free for all to peruse and use for the restoration of our great party,” he said in a statement.

During his campaign, Walters identified several priority areas for the party if he emerged leader, including the strengthening of party governance, revitalising membership, empowerment of women, empowerment of youth, strengthening party finances and “reclaiming our rightful place in the hearts of Barbadians”.

Walters said he remained committed to the DLP, as he joined others in calling for unity going forward.

“Supporters, well-wishers and comrades, my love and commitment to the party remain unwavering. The love of party is the one thing that we all feel strongly about and share in common. May that love and loyalty to party continue to be the thing that binds us and keeps us focused on the task ahead,” said Walters.

Walters received 188 votes, compared to Dr Ronnie Yearwood’s 422. Also contesting the presidency were Dr David Estwick, who received 227 votes, and Richard Sealy (29 votes).

“I believe that both of you gentlemen [David Estwick and Richard Sealy] have a great role to play in rebuilding this party and presenting an alternative to Barbadians. I expect to see you both at the round table. To the President and all elected officers, congratulations to you,” said Walters. (MM)
