The 2023 Rhodes Scholar is Bahamian Jervon Sands. During a media briefing at State House on Tuesday, he was announced as the recipient of this year’s coveted scholarship, beating out a number of other worthy candidates from around the region. Sands told the media he was interested in pursuing studies and a career grounded in the protection of the environment. “The courses I am pursuing are the Environmental Change and Management MSc, as well as the Sustainability, Enterprise and Environmental MSc. This is an unimaginable [and] exciting opportunity. I’m very grateful to be in this position and I’m very excited for the work I will be doing moving forward when I return from my studies and work in the region,” he said. Asked why he chose that area of study, Sands replied: “It’s one of the most pressing problems, the climate crisis, and I want to be a part of making solutions to inform the Caribbean and safeguard Caribbean countries.” Cecil John Rhodes established the Rhodes Scholarship in 1902, and for the past 100 years, it has enabled young people from all over the world to pursue full-time postgraduate studies at the University of Oxford.
