Top 11-plus students score identical marks

ryanna Bascombe of Providence School and Finn Graham of the St Winifred’s School are the top students in this year’s Barbados Secondary Schools Entrance Examination (BSSEE) with identical scores.
They each scored 99 in Mathematics and 96 in English with an ‘A’ in Composition. The overall converted mark is 246.81.
Minister of Education, Technological and Vocational Training Kay McConney made the announcement today at a press confererence at the Elsie Payne Complex where she indicated that there was a minimal increase in the number of students allocated to public secondary schools this year when compared to last year.
Of the students who took the examination this year, 96.1 per cent were allocated to public secondary schools as compared to 95.4 per cent in 2023.
Mathematics scores ranged from 0 to 100. Nine students scored 100 marks in the subject this year, compared to 35 in 2023 and two in 2022.
In English, no student scored full marks this year and scores ranged from 0 to 98 per cent. One students scored zero in English as compared to two last year.
“The statistics indicate there was not a major significant difference in the performance of students between 2023,” McConney said.
She said the ministry will continue to analyse the specific areas where the students had the greatest challenges so it can provide targeted intervention to improve the quality of instruction. (SD)
