Storm Tracker:  PM Mottley updates country on passage of Hurricane Beryl

 

Prime Minister Mia Mottley updated the nation on the passage of Hurricane Beryl earlier this evening.  Here are key points from her address.

1. There is a possibility that Barbados may be spared the full brunt of hurricane force winds from Beryl at this stage (barring any change in the system’s position). However, the island will be impacted by tropical storm winds. Officials have indicated 40 to 60 miles per hour winds and the possibility of hurricane force gusts. The PM urged Barbadians to remain vigilant and not to panic.

2. Director of the Barbados Meteorological Services (BMS) Sabu Best reported that 40 miles per hour winds have already been recorded at Charnocks, Christ Church.

3. Thirty-three (33) Category 1 Shelters are currently opened. People are already in shelters.

4. The PM urged residents to stay inside, stay off the roads.

5. The Barbados Light and Power Company has put measures in place to manage the network during the passage of Hurricane Beryl.

6. PM Mottley apologised for the late notice issued by the Barbados Water Authority of the shutdown of its pumping stations.

7. Barbados has already received offers of support from neighbouring Caribbean countries, Latin America and its development partners should the island be significantly impacted by Hurricane Beryl.

8. PM Mottley urged Barbadians to pray for St Vincent and the Grenadines and Grenada. Both countries are preparing for the passage of Hurricane Beryl.
