Young ice skater faces long recovery after cricket bat accident

Eight-year-old Ahnora Lewis, one of the youngest competitors with the Barbados Ice Skating Association, is facing a difficult and costly road to recovery after a devastating accident earlier this year left her with severe dental injuries.

The incident occurred on January 15 when Ahnora, a student at Luther Thorne Primary, was struck in the mouth by a cricket bat wielded by another child at play while walking home from school. The impact knocked out three of her teeth, including two permanent incisors, and caused extensive damage to her gums.

Ahnora’s mother, Stacia Davis, told Barbados TODAY that although her daughter received emergency surgery, the initial procedures did not fully repair the injuries, leaving a series of daunting medical challenges.

“After many consultations with the dentist and surgeons, it has now been determined that the initial procedures did not work and it was unhealthy for her to go on without further procedures,” Davis said.

The young athlete now requires extensive dental work, including additional surgeries to repair her gums and jaw, as well as dental implants or prosthetics to replace her missing teeth.

The accident has had a profound impact on Ahnora’s confidence and social life.

“Ahnora went from being an active and confident child to someone who now hides her smile and avoids social situations,” her mother explained. “She used to be so outgoing, especially on the ice, but this accident has really changed her.”

Despite receiving some donations, the family is struggling to manage the high costs associated with Ahnora’s ongoing care. Davis acknowledged that “her medical expenses continue to be far beyond our reach”.

In response, the family has set up a GoFundMe page to help cover the expenses, which include frequent dental visits, potential surgeries, dentures and necessary psychological support.

“These pending procedures are necessary, not only for the health of the child but also to aid in restoring her smile and by extension her confidence,” Davis added.

The family is appealing to the community for support. “We appreciate any and all donations, as this will aid with the mountain of expenses we continue to face. We have faith that Ahnora will someday be her normal self again and we are truly grateful for all the well wishes she receives,” Davis said.
