Coach Andrew Callender will have been well pleased with his charges over the past week, as Barbados topped the tables in the men’s competition at the 39th Criollo Cup in Caguas, Puerto Rico. Quontana Clarke joined Khali Roberts as individual champions, mining more metal for the four-member under the auspices of the Barbados Amateur Weightlifting Association (BAWA).

Clarke, an experienced lifter, was the overall champion in his division, after winning the snatch and taking silver in clean and jerk. The 33-year-old inventory manager and sales associate competed in the men’s 103 kg class, clearing a gold medal total of 105 kg in snatch, and 131 kg in clean and jerk. His 236 kg total earned him the title in his division.

Roberts had won both of his events on Friday , whilst new athletes Darcy Alexander and Amoi Greenidge had promising starts on international competitive debuts. Greenidge and Alexander were both awarded  medals as the  international athletes in the competition.

Thanks largely to Clarke and Roberts, however, Barbados emerged as the men’s champions at Complejo Deportivo Ángel O. Berríos Díaz de Caguas. BAWA has been competing at this meet since the early 2000’s.

On the local front, the Barbados federation is getting set to host the Philips & Springer Classic on November 30 this year, where these four athletes and more will have the chance to strut their stuff in front of a home audience.
