Local News BWU Expresses concern and calls for action against violence following shooting at Kirtons gas station Barbados Today13/01/20250274 views BWU General Secretary Toni Moore speaking to the media after touring supermarkets. (HG) On behalf of the Barbados Workers’ Union, I wish to express our deepest concern and prayers for the worker who was injured in yesterday’s shooting incident at Kirton’s Gas Station in St. Philip. We stand with this worker, his family, and all who have been impacted by this act of violence, hoping for a full and speedy recovery. Too many workers who leave home every day to earn an honest living are finding themselves caught in circumstances beyond their control. This incident comes exactly one week after the tragic shooting involving KFC workers heading home in a company vehicle long after a tour of duty. This latest incident has left us now with two consecutive Sundays marred by violence on a day that most Barbadians hold dear and sacred. This cannot be who we are or what we allow our country to become. Crime is a growing challenge in Barbados, and addressing it requires more than just outrage; it requires action. We cannot turn a blind eye when we know or suspect someone is veering down the wrong path. If you see something, say something. If you are a family member, a friend, or even just a concerned neighbour, and you know that someone is hiding a weapon or engaging in activities that threaten the safety of others, potentially and actually, please speak up. For the love of your own loved one who could become a victim—or for the sake of someone else’s innocent child—do not remain silent. We, as Barbadians, need to let our voices be heard loud and clear: this is not good enough. It is within us to stop this. Every act of violence tears at the fabric of our society, but every act of courage and accountability strengthens it. Comrades, we are better than this. Barbados, we are better than this. Let us each take responsibility for creating the kind of Barbados we can all be proud of—a Barbados where families, workers, and communities are safe and feel safe. We call on all citizens to stand together in saying enough is enough, and we continue to encourage all other leaders of organizations to step up in this fight as we encourage each other through word and deed to condemn these vicious acts. Let us reject the path of violence and instead rebuild our sense of care and commitment to each other. Unity is strength.
