PM’s Cup: Deacons storm back, Wotton stun Ellerton

Deacons cruised to an emphatic come-from-behind victory, while Wotton were forced to dig deep, as both sides recorded Group D victories, when the Prime Minister’s Cup resumed with two games at The Glebe, St George, on Monday.

Playing in the night’s opening encounter, Deacons came from two goals down to defeat Chickmont 6-2.

Chickmont made a brilliant start to the game, with Demar Stone scoring the competition’s earliest goal, during the first minute of the game. 

Things went from bad to worse for Deacons in the tenth minute, when Norrin Corbin made it 2-0 to Chickmont.

Deacons, however, pulled a goal back via Shamaine Richards in the 24th minute, before drawing level five minutes later, as Tevin Barker-Savoury stunned Chickmont to make it 2-2.

That score did not change before the half-time break, but Deacons turned the game on its head in the final 45 minutes.

Richards grabbed his second goal of the match in the 55th minute to give his side a 3-2 lead, before Xavier Bayne’s goal just seconds later made it 4-2 to Deacons, with Chickmont now in serious trouble.

Player-of-the-Match Shaquon Haynes still had enough time to complete a double strike, with a 79th minute goal followed by one three minutes later, as Deacons completed the most dramatic comeback of the season so far.

Deacons captain Haynes said his side bounced back well after a slow start to the game.

“I did not expect Chickmont to score in the first 25 seconds of the game but I just had to build my team’s spirit and we fought back from there.

“Our team got put together during the Brittons Hill tournament. Most of our players are from the First Division and we have some lil men too,” Haynes added.

Haynes says he was always confident of securing the win despite the early challenges.

“I did not expect the score to be 6-2, I was expecting it to be 6-0 because they could not beat us. Once we enjoy ourselves and play football we always come back from two goals down all the time,” he revealed.

In the nightcap game, Wotton upset Ellerton 1-0 following a 13th minute goal from captain Keon Harding.

With his team having been awarded a free kick from 25 yards on the right-hand side of the field, Harding curled a magnificent shot over the wall and into the back of the net, inches under the cross bar, leaving Ellerton keeper Jamar Brewster no chance.

Moments earlier, Brewster had denied Rivaldo Massiah from the penalty spot, as Wotton, who are under the guidance of new head coach Fabian Massiah, missed the opportunity to take the lead.

It was the foul Ellerton conceded in the scramble to clear the ball following the penalty that resulted in the game’s only goal.

Speaking after the match, Harding was pleased to have secured the win.

“It feels great to help my team win the match and get the three points so that we can go forward in the tournament.

“The work that the coach has come in and done with us has given the guys a different feeling. We came out and executed what the coach put out for us in training and we got the three points,” Harding said.
