Popular thief put on bond

“Get help! You need something to stop you from doing this. Go to a church and get some assistance. They won’t refuse you!”

That’s what a Bridgetown magistrate advised a 55-year-old woman who once again pleaded guilty to stealing from Popular Supermarket.

Magistrate Douglas Frederick noted that Maylene Narrie Corbin had appeared before him earlier for a similar offence at the same store, and said “I am sorry, I will not do it again.”

In addition to living alone, Corbin said she had been divorced since 1995, had no children and depended solely on the $72 from the Welfare Department. She has also had two toes amputated.

The charge against Corbin was that on February 4, 2019, she stole three roll-ons, valued $7.05; three packs of Turbo Drink Mix valued $7.92 and one O’Henry chocolate, valued $1.99 and all belonging to BJ’s Value Mart, trading as Popular Discounts.

According to Prosecutor, Sergeant Carrison Henry, the elderly woman went to the Spry Street branch of the supermarket with a red bag. She took a basket from the store and went through the various aisles and placed the items in her basket. She was observed by security and when she attempted to leave was stopped and searched and the items found.

Magistrate Frederick placed her on a bond for six months and if breached, she will spend three months in prison.
