A show of creativity

Creativity was highlighted when 97 students from the Maria Holder Nursery School in Oldbury, St Phillip showcased their bonnets at the annual Easter Bonnet Parade.

Some of the students’ colourful hats, created by their parents and guardians, were made from recycled materials such as construction paper, newspaper and cotton wool.

Principal Sharon Knight told Barbados TODAY the event assists the school’s relationship with the parents.

“What we try to do here is to ensure that we have a positive relationship with our parents and get them to recognize the important role that they play in their children’s education—not only in reading a book, but getting involved in their children’s creative juices and at the same time ensuring that they are actively involved in activities that are designed for the children, as it motivates the children to learn,” she said.

Knight added that early childhood education seeks to develop a solid foundation for children and it is paramount that teachers reinforce children’s love for learning.

“Not just concentrating only on Mathematics and English, but we want them to be thinking about becoming a scientist, an engineer, a doctor, or even the careers that we have not thought of as yet,” she said. (LG)
