Entertainment Fete and ‘famalay’ Barbados Today11/04/20190145 views UWI’s weekend of revelry Thousands of University of West Indies (UWI) Cave Hill students tossed aside their books and took a break from the long hours of studying for a weekend of revelry. From Friday night into Saturday morning, it was complete bedlam as approximately 3,000 feters congregated at the Roy Marshall car park for UWIVAL Jouvert: Pandemonium. It was all about water, paint, powder, soca and a bit of dancehall for the students who crammed into the car park to the booming sounds of some of the region’s best artistes. The deejay line-up did not disappoint with the likes of Monstapiece, Fullklipp, Titan VCD, DJ Earthquake, Flip Tha Boss, Sir Lancealot and Dj Dooks and Lando bringing the vibes. A surprise appearance by popular Barbadian DJ Puffy had the crowding roaring as well. The deejays mixed it up with soca and dancehall but the highlights of the night were the regional performers hitting the stage. The saying ‘home drums beat the loudest’ was true when Barbadian bashment soca artiste Mole graced the stage and performed well-known hits like Do It Fuh Daddy and Aye with Bruce Almightee. Trinidadian Erphaan Alves, known for his tunes like Overdue, No Habla and Blaze In Love, was a crowd favourite as well. Dominica’s king of bouyon, Asan Banton, had the crowd wilding and Making A Mess during his set. Meanwhile, Top Striker’s Lil Natty and Thunda struck it out the car park as their energetic and dynamic performance kept the party going into wee hours of the morning. The partying vibe continued throughout Saturday for the big jump – UWIVAL 2019. Over 1, 000 students participated in the big jump which travelled from Bridgetown Port Authority, across Spring Garden Highway, and up University Drive to conclude on the Cave Hill Campus grounds. The four bands paraded along the route with regional and international flags waving as the truck blasted sounds of soca from across the region. It was one big Famalay as every crew chipped down the road enjoying their last moments of revelry and mas before exams begin. (KK)
