Washington bound!

Eighteen-year-old Tajiri Griffith, a sixth form student at The Christ Church Foundation School, is the recipient of a $2, 500 scholarship compliments of the Soroptimist International of Jamestown.

Griffith is one of two Barbadian students chosen to represent the island at the Global Youth Leaders Conference which will be held in Washington DC. The cost of the trip is valued at $10,000.

President of Soroptimist International of Jamestown Cheryl Niles presented the cheque donation at The Foundation School this morning and said the organization was thrilled to sponsor a male to attend this prestigious event.

“He is the recipient of the Global Youth Leaders Conference and has been chosen to represent his school and Barbados in Washington this year. We were approached to make a donation that he would be able to attend this prestigious conference,” she said.

Speaking to the media after accepting the donation, Griffith said he hopes to become a hydraulic engineer and attending the Global Youth Leaders Conference would further develop his leadership skills.

“I am excited because this trip is really expensive. Travelling internationally is a big thing for me and developing my leadership skills is a big thing for me,” he said.

Griffith added that he is well-rounded and involved in track and field. He runs the 400-metre and the 200-metre dash and also plays the saxophone and clarinet. He advised any young student who is seeking to become a part of the Global Youth Leaders Conference to grasp the opportunity.

“Whenever they get an opportunity, grab it and do not hesitate because this is extremely effective to your future,” he said. (LG)
