Mayers ready for Sol Rally 2019

Barbadian motorsports duo Barry Mayers and Roger Mayers are confident about their chances in this year’s Sol Rally Barbados.

Speaking to the media at a mix and mingle event held at Sandals Barbados, St Lawrence Gap, Christ Church this morning, Barry told the media he had sorted out his problems with his vehicle, and he was raring and ready for this year’s Rally.
“I am settled with the car, I am at one with the car. I think we would still like to do some upgrades with the engine which hasn’t happened for this year but hopefully next year. My goal is to keep up with Roger,” he said.

Barry said it was refreshing to have a new route which returns to Stewart’s Hill for the first time since 2009.

“I think the route is excellent, starting from King of The Hill last weekend. King of the Hill is a new venue, a real nice stage, something different from the Canefield stage which has been done for a lot of years. Rally Barbados’ route is quite nice as well, a few different stages. They are trying to mix it up and it is quite refreshing,” he said.

Roger said the preparations were going good and he was feeling confident.
“Right after King of the Hill, believe it or not, we have stripped the cars apart again. We have been through the gearboxes, suspension, making sure that everything on the cars is ready to go for the rally. Feeling very confident with the car and as you saw we had a good performance at King of the Hill. I am feeling really good, ready to push and looking forward for the rally coming up,” he said.

The veteran champion driver told the media he has been able to source new tyres after his previous ones had been giving him problems on the track.
“Basically, the suppliers had to change the design of the tyres because the FIA forced this. So, this gave me time to get the car to adapt to the new style tyre and I think we solved that problem and I am feeling better in the car than I ever have,” he said.

Roger said that there was a lot of pressure to be able to keep up with the four-wheel drive vehicles as he was competing in a two-wheel drive.
“It is immense at times, especially with some of the very technical stages like on Saturday at Springvale, a very technical stage. There is a lot of pressure resting on your shoulders to perform on those stages and keep up with these four-wheel drive cars and stay ahead of the two-wheel drive cars. So, a lot of pressure rests there but I have been in motorsports for over twenty-years, so I am ready to go,” he said.
