Guyana celebrates golden republic jubilee

Guyanese based in Barbados were today joined by their Barbadian counterparts in a church service at The Cathedral Church of St Michael and All Angels in observing the 50th anniversary of Guyana becoming a Cooperative Republic, on February 23, 1970.

In addition to presentations by representatives of the Christian, Islamic, and Hindu faiths representing the three dominant religions in Guyana, there was reading of a Martin Carter poem, presented by his daughter, and a rendition of the country’s Republic Song.

The three speakers, Dean Dr Jeffrey Gibson, Barbados Minister of Foreign Affairs, Sandra Husbands, and Guyana Consul General, Cita Pilgrim, all underscored the historically close ties Guyana and Barbados have enjoyed. (GA)
