Elderly woman pleads guilty to dangerous driving

A case of causing death by dangerous driving against a 74-year-old woman came to an end in the High Court today when she pleaded guilty to the lesser charge of dangerous driving.

Merlene Elvira Spencer-Corbin, of Heywoods Park, St Peter was on trial before Justice Christopher Birch charged that on November 13, 2015 she caused the death of Norman Foster by driving her motorcar E2568 along Goddings Alley, Queen’s Street, Speightstown, St Peter at a speed or in a manner dangerous to the public.

Today, on day three of the trial, prosecutors Senior Crown Counsel Olivia Davis and Crown Counsel Romario Straker, were set to call more witnesses to the stand, when Spencer-Corbin who was represented by attorney-at-law Hilary Nelson, changed her plea.

Eight witnesses had already given evidence in the case which was being tried in Supreme Court No. 5A.

Justice Birch gave her a May 6 date to return to court for sentencing. In the meantime a pre-sentencing report on her is to be prepared by the Probation Department.
