Wrestlers put on thrilling show

Enthusiastic supporters in Barbados were treated to a one of a kind show last Saturday night when Bruggadown management hosted Face 2 Face wrestling at the Sir Garfield Sobers Gymnasium.

Former World Wrestling Entertainment (WWE) icons, Carlos ‘Carlito’ Colón and Christopher ‘Chris Masters’ Mordetzky amongst other professionals put on a fantastic show for those in attendance.

The feature match of the night was the heavyweight championship clash between Chris Masters and the new Face 2 Face champion, Carlito.

The two former WWE champions were evenly matched inside the ring,  incorporating signature moves such as the masterlock and back cracker.

A former 13-time Universal champion, Carlito sprayed a mouth full of liquid into Chris Masters face and followed up with a submission lock that earned him the victory.

Carlito who has been wrestling for 21 years having begun his journey in 2004, last visited Barbados as a teenager.

He said he was looking forward to returning soon.

A native from Puerto Rico, Carlito currently resides in Houston, Texas and said he enjoys doing shows around the world. He encouraged persons not to feel discouraged about the sport.

“The crowd was very energetic, they seemed to like the show so I am glad we had a good time.

“I would say come check it out, see it live. You might like it, you might love it, you might hate it, but I think a lot more people might like it than hate it,” Carlito said.

The penultimate showdown of the night was between reigning queen Melina Perez who made light work of Renee Michelle.

Clearly adored by her fans here in Barbados, Melina said she absolutely enjoyed her experience.

“It was the best experience because everybody was so sweet, kind, happy and supportive. I was hugging everybody, hugging as many people as I can so it was a great experience for me. I love it here,” Melina said.

This is the second time Melina has gotten the best of Michelle and retained the women’s championship. As one of the best female competitors to ever grace the wrestling ring, Melina said she was happy to see the progression of wrestling among females globally.

Melina Perez retained her women’s championship title against Renee Michelle.

“If you love wrestling, you love wrestling no matter what gender you are. So from a female perspective of how I love it, it is the same all-round.

“It is different for what we have to go through and how we wrestle. Women wrestle differently than men and that’s my opinion. Some women would say no we are the same but for me, I embrace the fact that I am more flexible. My female body is different from guys and I would use that to my advantage,” Melina said.

She added: “Sometimes it is harder for the women too, because the guys look at you and it’s like you need to prove something to them to be able to walk in that ring.”

Melina said initially she felt like a weirdo “wrestling back in the day”. However, she said seeing so many females participating in the sport made her happy.

“Back in the day when I first started out, I was a weirdo, like I was weird that I even liked wrestling. So all my friends were like why are you so weird. They were so mean to me and now you have so many females loving wrestling that I’m not weird anymore. I can be me and that’s accepted now, “ she said.

In some of the other matches, Randy Reno and Simon Sermon defeated the iRevolt team to retain the Face 2 Face Wrestling Tag Team titles.

Gregg Jones of Barbados got squashed by Brian Cage, Phillip ‘PJ Black’ Lloyd trounced Marty Scurll, Quinn McKay defeated Savannah Evans and Flip Gordon defeated Matt Sydal.
