Cayman shares vital COVID kits with Barbados

The Cayman Islands Government has come to the assistance of Barbados in its fight against the growing coronavirus infections, gifting the island 20, 000 COVID-19 test kits at cost price.

The news was revealed by Cayman Islands Premier Alden McLoughlin yesterday on his Facebook page, when he indicated that Barbados’ Prime Minister Mia Mottley had reached out to him on Thursday seeking assistance in procuring the globally sought-after test kits.

Barbados has so far recorded four deaths from COVID-19.

According to McLoughlin, Prime Minister Mottley, who is currently recuperating following a surgical procedure, reached out to him “to ask if we could let Barbados have some of the test kits we’d managed to procure from South Korea”.

The Cayman Islands, to which many Barbadian professionals have migrated over the decades, sold the Barbados government 20, 000 of the more than 165, 000 test kits it managed to secure from South Korea at cost, and flew the shipment to Barbados yesterday.

“We have been in a very fortunate position to purchase many more test kits than we need. Therefore is it only fitting that we share the excess with our friends and neighbours, who can use them to save lives and eradicate this virus,” McLoughlin said.
