Acting PM Santia Bradshaw: May Day is a celebration of all workers

Acting Prime Minister Santia Bradshaw

May Day is a celebration of all workers.

But this years Labour Day will perhaps be etched in our minds for many years to come. It bears extra significance, as the Covid-19 pandemic has sent the global economy into a tailspin. It has brought major economic sectors to a grinding halt and has made some of our often unnoticed workers
– our nurses, garbage collectors, cashiers, supermarket packers, public transport drivers, delivery drivers, healthcare and emergency personnel more recognised and appreciated for the excellent work that they do.

I want to join with all leaders of labour, employers and all Barbadians in saluting all workers of this beloved island, who, irrespective of their sectors have made the necessary adjustments and sacrificed greatly to keep Barbadians safe and Barbados afloat during this difficult time.

Without these dedicated workers and the support of their families and loved ones who continue to stand by their side supporting them, it would not be possible for Barbadians to stand strong in such an uncertain environment. We salute you for the long hours, the sacrifice and your commitment to service and pray that God will continue to keep you safe as you continue to keep us safe.

As we celebrate today, let us also remember the men and women who fought tirelessly for the rights of workers and those who continue to do so. Let us also remember that it is the labour movement that has helped to secure so much of what we take for granted today – holiday with pay, health and safety at work and paternity rights to name a few. And, it is the labour movement that will be at the forefront of helping us to shape the face of labour in the coming months as we prepare to reopen our economic sectors and work towards life post Covid-19.

Happy Labour Day!
